I would like to hear your thoughts about Criterion in the current OOP market.

Excellent article Ant. I have reserved a copy of Salo.In regards to the Hitchcock
set I'm more excited about Lifeboat than any other release in that set.I mentioned
in an earlier post that the COLLECTOR not the average person sets the OOP market.
It's diseased individuals like myself that have no qualms in paying mega bucks for a
title that THEY CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT. Were not going anywhere.This is where most
of my disposible income goes.So in my humble opinion there will always be SALO's
out there. Right now I would pay 200.00 for a clean used copy of (ironically)Dutchman
or LeLoux's Time Masters maybe more if they were new.You guy's are actually
compeating not only with other vendors but with the Chain stores themselves.
EXAMPLE: Went to my local FYE at lunch today found the Quatermass double
feature used: FYE's price $99.99

In regards to Criterion it all depends what goes OOP. Say for example if
Gilliam's Brazil vanished and was only available in the OOP market and nowhere
else it would go thru the roof(especially the 3 disc box set) whereas Clouzot
(Le Corbeau, Jenny Lamour) are much more aquired tastes.

Hate to mention it, but it is the same cut print as their previous edition. They did not use the uncut print that BCI used previously.

to quote DVD Beaver's review:

NOTE: Our original comparison was done many years ago but the new captures were obtained utilizing the exact same method. It appears as though the Criterion has, both, the most detail and more information in the frame (side edges) - even more so than the BFI. It is cleaner and smoother - damage removed but is still missing the short 25-second sequence at 0:42:24 (see below) during the first wedding ceremony, where one of the masters quotes a poem by Gottfried Benn. The sequence is intact on the Region 2 BFI DVD.

The region 2 BFI DVD mentioned is of course the older one. As I mentioned in the other Salo thread I'm still wondering if BFI is really using Criterion's master. Also I questioned why they would choose to release it with a missing scene when it has been known for years about the extra scene in the previous BFI edition.

I plan to pick up Salo no doubt.

this criterion foray into br is very complex imho yesh. i am not hd-enabled (i dont count hd dvd because it is not viable in the long run and because i dont really have any hd dvds) and do like to collect critierions (surprise! surprise!).

right now, my guess is that criterion is taking the logical step that they must into hd. if it works out great and br does the same, im sure we will see the demise of the criterion on sd dvd in the future whenever that is. then, i am sure there will be some sd dvd criterions that will rocket in the oop market, as rights are lost and whatnot. otoh, if the br criterion doesnt do so well, we may see some oop br criterions maybe eh? in either case, im guessing oop titles will continue as they historically have. long live oop!

and me? i have shipping notice for my salo re-issue. ill give it some time and then focus my hunt on one of them older white ring editions too

Nice article, ant. I find it ironic that the oop market is suddenly struggling and that this happens around the same time Salo, the pinnacle of rare oop dvds, is re-released. What are the odds?

So every once in awhile my wife sees a package come in or looks at my DVDs and gets upset. Not too long ago something similar to this happened.

Reenactment:
My Wife: "Don't you have enough DVDs already?"
(pause while I come up with a response)
Me: "I'm finally going to get you a real copy of Rebecca! They're re-releasing it in October."
My Wife: "Really? I love that movie so much." (walks away no longer upset.)

Too bad once it comes out again I can't play that card anymore.

IMO sales of the original Salo is going to go down quite a bit, the only thing I am absolutely thrilled about is all the sellers who are offering the cheap bootlegs of Salo are going to get stuck with alot of their crap product. I was just looking on Amazon and it is amazing how many bootlegs are for sale there, it's been quite some time since I searched Ebay for original Salo's so it might be time to check again. I know I have my new release Salo coming from Amazon, I was not sure if any B&M store would carry such a controversial title, I suspect FYE might carry it, they did carry the Caligula SE some months ago so anything is possible....

I already own a "Facets version". Its a pretty crappy version with burned subtitles and a menu that navigates poorly. But its as watchable as the original Criterion. I almost was able to get a new copy of Salo at one time in my life at a decent price, but was too slow. Not to mention, once upon a time, in a land far, far away, I saw a copy sitting there for sale at the, then, expensive price of $29.99. But I did not have any money to my name. By the time I realized what it was, it was long gone.

I enjoyed the movie and its political and symbolical ideas, however, its not an easy movie to watch. I will probably rent Salo at first rather than buy it outright.

I never was one to try to collect everything for the hell of it, I only buy movies that I'm actually interested in seeing. With that said I have been meaning to catch up on all the old AH movies, and I am tempted to buy this new box set along witht he Master Collection, but now that CC makes Blu-Rays for the same price I really don't want to buy the DVD only for the set to eb rereleased in HD later, already got burned with The Last Emperor...
