Eyes Wide Shut

Postby oopAnt » Sun Mar 09, 2008 9:41 pm

Warner Brothers release of the new Eyes Wide Shut, Stanley Kubrick's last film before his death, is having some issues. Warner quietly recalled all versions and quietly re-released them. Read the story here:

Super confusing. Should I get a used Stanley Kubrick box set just to make sure I get the unrated Eyes Wide Shut? I'm sort of beyond OOP/investment issues with Kubrick; I just need the movies in the best possible version with the best possible extras.

BTW: Why the hell can't whoever makes DVDs get Kubrick right? Is it too much to ask? I mean he's only THE MOST REVERED AMERICAN DIRECTOR OF ALL TIME. Give me the damn movies in whatever aspect ratio they were intended to be screened at, give me some extras, and leave me alone. Jeez.

All the new editions are unrated, recalled or not. The previous editions are R-rated. The new special editions state R-rated and unrated, but only the unrated is on it.

As far as getting Kubrick right: I think its a matter of what was presented in the theater versus how Kubrick considered the home video presentation and that seems to be where the confusion lies. From what I gather Kubrick understood the life of the home theater and considered it and, from what I can tell, usually wanted it presented it in 1.33:1 as the best home presentation.

That of course, is just an educated guess.

Ok, I might be having a "slow" moment here, but why did these get recalled? Or is this not yet clear, which would explain why I am so confused. According to the blog, the features, film's content, and aspect ratio are the same on the original HD-DVD and the re-released version. Anyone know what changed? :?:

As stated, I dont know whats different, but as I can tell, nothing has changed. Why the recall happened, I dont know, but can only assume 2 things a) repackage to state only the unrated, or b) fix the encoding issues. I have not see the new ones, nor do I have a high def version to verify any coding problems.

Oh I am certain of it. The article was less about whether or not these DVDs are out of print, or that they are, or what have you, but mostly found it interesting as a side note in the collectible DVD world that the recent Eyes Wide Shut editions were all recalled. Some people like to collect recalled versions. Sometimes I feel it necessary to discuss these small matters just as much as the big topics. Whether or not they become valuable is hard to say, unless something substantially different is in the new one.

Watched the original HD-DVD release last night and didn't notice any transfer or sound issues. Great movie, wish I hadn't put off watching it again for so long. Last time I saw it was at the movie theater.

It is a very good movie. I appreciate it more and more at each viewing because I actually think its a bit more subtle than at first viewing.

Is the orgy scene altered or not? Just want to know if it has the rated or unrated version. Back cover states Rated R.

I can't 100% say for certain, but I'm pretty damn sure it's not because I didn't see that damn table in the middle of the room covering stuff up. I did see some pubes and a bunch of humping.

As far as time or length goes, the movie is the same. The only difference is the orgy scenes remove the shadowy figures that stood in front of the people having sex. But otherwise there is no difference between the two versions.

Thanks, I have the HD-DVD but can't watch it because I don't have a player. Btw, I noticed that Amazon's product page for the recalled HD-DVD is Unrated while the new version is a 2-Disc Set (maybe Rated and Unrated?).

Are we sure this isn't another Amazon screw up like the Amazon.Co.UK HD-DVD Godfather Collection which turned into SD-DVD later. It says DVD in the description as well. Maybe they re-released the DVD in a 2-Disc version, but I doubt they did so on HD-DVD. Surely we would've heard something elsewhere way sooner or seen a "Super Rare 2 disc Eyes Wide Shut HD-DVD" pop up on eBay.

I am fairly certain all the new editions are only the unrated version. I have not seen any around as of late, so its hard to say at this point. KFelon, where did you pick up your copy?

I was at Fry's this evening and saw an SD version of EWS and noticed that the package was redone on the back which states that it includes the "International Unrated Version", but no mention of the R-rated version.

No site of a HD or BD version there.
