im prolly in the minority here, but i would not buy a dvd for my collection if i knew it was an ex-rental. now do i have some ex-rentals in my collection via greedbay? prolly. but ignorance is bliss eh?

i know this doesnt apply to the sellers here, but i just wanted to throw in my 2 grains of salt :D

Nice article Ant. I just wanted to say that I revisited a store yesterday and found 15 additional OOP dvds that I know for sure they were not there on my first trip so I agree that they got restocked just a bit. Also, one of the store's (not sure if all in my area) last day is Sunday (for better or worse) so....the END IS NEAR  . I've gotton SO spoiled with these quality finds that when it's over and start going back to my original hunting spots it's not going to feel the same. I'm thinking about hitting Austin this weekend for one last hurrah.

If anyone needs extra dvd cases (the good ones not the rental cases) you might ask the store for some. One store had a ton on the shelf and the manager said she was just going to throw them away and told me to help myself. These are the original cases that the dvds came with in the first place. My trunk of my car is now full with about 300 quality cases.

Good article, having the list there is enticing me to go back to at least 1 store nearby to double check for some titles I may have otherwise missed. If you only grab a couple titles, it really wouldn't take many good ones to roll you out of the negative. I doubt the market gets saturated with Salo's or anything as ludicrous as that, but the more common OOPs will be heavily affected for some time.

ex. 2 weeks ago I was scouring my DVD collection and realized I had a copy of Cheerleader Massacre, at the time they were around $40 on Amazon and only around 3 listed. Now that particular title has 15 listed and the prices are all the way down to $16.

It is interesting what video stores have locked away in their own vaults that never see the light of day. If the 4 copies of Rawhead Rex are any indication, its possible there are other stuff as well.

I myself saw the Hollywood Video had copies of Steamboat Bill, Jr. and Seven Chances, both Buster Keaton Films released by Image Entertainment and Kino Video, brand new in snapper cases. While these are not out of print, they are not items one would expect to regularly find at a Hollywood Video.

I did forget to put the film Condorman / Condorman on the list in the article. That also is a very difficult film to find. I dont see any rental versions coming up with that one either.

But the list is certainly nostalgic, but also I want to see what is truly rare and what is more readily available. I think its curious.

I personally prefer nice and clean, as-close-to-new-as-possible, looking covers and cases for DVDs in my collection. Usually I would never buy rental copies. However, once my local Hollywood stores get their prices down to $5 a disc or lower I'll probably start going apeshit and buying a lot. What I'll be looking for though is stuff I wouldn't normally buy at higher prices, not so much collectible stuff or items to resell (but rest assured I'll have my eyes out for pretty much anything Criterion or out-of-print).

I checked one local store already and didn't see much worth buying, at least not at $7.49 which is what they were last weekend. I'll be checking again though every week for the prices to drop.

My local Hollywood closes tomorrow. Today the $5.99 DVDs are $1.20, $9.99 DVDs are $1.99, and the $14.99 DVDs are $4.50. Oh yeah and all their VHS tapes are $1. I dropped in to double check the remaining inventory over and grabbed a couple titles for myself, not a whole lot that interested me, but at $2 I couldn't pass on a couple titles. Ohh yeah and all the candy was 18c or less, ice cream was about 18c a bar including the expensive kind, and the popcorn was 8c a bag... if anyone runs a store it might be a great way to pickup some snack items waaaaaaaaaaaaay below retail. Ended up walking out with 5 DVDs and a bunch of candy for around $15. I normally don't buy myself ex-rentals but alot of the movies I grabbed are blind buys and if they end up sucking and I can't resell them for anything, it's really no loss as everything was cheaper than a rental price and can always give them to friends or family.

I'm new, I just thought I'd post my findings. I visited 8 stores in my area and came away with some good stuff, I found 23 older Criterions but the only OOP one was Robocop and none had inserts.

The only DVD I've found so far with an insert was the OOP Halloween Extended Version.
I found Mizoguchi's 47 Ronin Parts I & II,
two copies on Hands on a Hard Body (both of which I've sold),
AB's Fantastic Planet,
Daytrippers,
8 sealed brand new copies of Rawhead Rex (7 of which I'm selling),
many copies of Midnite Movies OOPs Planet of the Vampires and Dr Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine,
2 copies of Freeway 2: Confessions of a Trick Baby (both of which are selling),
AB's Diva (which sold),
Roberto Benigni's The Monster (I kept),
Cronenberg's Shivers (I kept),
3 copies of Almodovar's Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (sold all),
Fox Lorber's The Killer (sold),
Cassavetes The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (sold because I can get it in the Criterion box),
Pierrot le Fou (sold because I'm pretty sure this is coming up on Criterion's slate),
2 copies of the Lair of the White Worm SE (both sold),
The Scent of Green Papaya (sold),
In The Realm of the Senses dubbed version (sold),
Tampopo (kept),
Everyone Says I Love You (sold),
Not of This Earth (sold),
Battle Beyond the Stars (sold),
Goodtimes' Double Dragon (kept),
AB's Tenebre (kept),
AB's Notorious (kept),
CC's Unbearable Lightness of Being (kept).

There is one store in my area with an AMAZING selection that I hope to get back to before they close and take advantage of their stuff one more time.

There is a store REALLY close to my house that I'm really hoping liquidates because it has all three OOP Hitchcock Criterions. I'm going to drive by everyday and hope and pray that it goes under.

Movie Gallery Inc., the parent company of Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video rental stores, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Oct. 16.

The company plans to close 520 U.S. stores as part of the restructuring, but East Wenatchee's Hollywood Video at 595 Grand Road, is not one of them, according to company spokesman Andrew Siegel of the corporate communications firm Joele Frank, Wilkinson Brimmer Katcher.

Siegel said the company will close two Movie Gallery stores in Washington state, one in Lacey and the other in Graham. In addition, one Hollywood Video store in Spokane will close.

I found a couple things...looks like it's Movie Galleries that are closing. Too bad there are 0 in my area. I'm sure we will hear something soon though about what stores and where.
